Insuring a Travel Trailer vs. a Motor Home: What You Need to Know

Understanding the Basics: Travel Trailers vs. Motor Homes

Travel Trailers: These are vehicles that you hitch to another vehicle such as a truck or an SUV and tow.

Motor Homes: These are vehicles designed for both transportation and temporary living.

Key Differences Coverage:

  1. Travel Trailer Insurance: Coverage for a travel trailer would be found on a Scheduled Personal Articles (SPA) policy.  This policy attaches to your property policy (e.g. Homeowners, Farmowners, Lake Estate) for ease of business.

Coverage under a SPA for a Travel Trailer:

  • Open perils coverage for physical loss to the trailer itself, which includes risks like collision, fire or theft. These include, but are not limited to:
    • Collision
    • Fire
    • Water or Flood
    • Breakage of glass
    • Emergency road service
    • Vacation expense allowance
  • Named perils coverage for personal property inside the trailer
  1. Motor Home Insurance: Motor homes have their own set of insurance. If you already have a Personal Auto Policy with Farm Bureau, adding coverage for your motor home is simple. You will just add the motor home coverage to your existing policy.

Coverage includes:

  • Collision Coverage for the vehicle itself
  • Liability protection for Bodily Injury and Property Damage
  • Personal Property Protection for items inside the motor home
  • Emergency Road Service, Roadside Assistance, and coverage for vacation expenses.

Choosing the right insurance for your travel trailer or motor home depends on the type of vehicle you own. Whether you’re towing a trailer or driving a motor home, be sure to understand the specific coverage requirements for each.
